Home / The Edit Insights 10th Anniversary: London to Paris with Wireflow Striking yet unpretentious, Wireflow embodies a natural minimalism while presenting light as a sculptural work of art. From its launch until today the collection has been a huge success, its graphic form and timeless elegance continuing to enchant spectators worldwide. To celebrate the collection’s 10th anniversary, we explore its origins and shed light on why Wireflow remains one of Vibia’s most iconic products. Origins The concept of Wireflow was born from an artistic exhibition by Arik Levy, an expressive installation of cables and light bulbs. From there, Arik began to consider the idea of elevating the cable, particularly since the LED, being low voltage, allowed for the use of thinner electrical cables. This introduced the potential for creating daring, multi-fall pendant installations, configuring the cables in sculpture-like form, both as a design and a work of art. “For some time, Pere (Vibia CEO) used to visit me in my studio. Seeing my original light sculpture in many different variations, he used to say “I want this, I want this, I want this”. Till one day I cracked and he seduced me into working on a generation of products…. I only agreed on the condition that we would make an extended family, curated to be the right solution for many different situations.” Arik LevyToday, the extended collection incorporates four unique iterations: ideal for illuminating large spaces with high ceilings, Wireflow Lineal traces delicate, formal lines with meticulous precision; Wireflow 3D forms weightless geometric volumes, characterised by their graphic simplicity; Wireflow Chandelier’s ultramodern silhouette echoes with a sense of timeless elegance; and, Wireflow Free-form converts flat planes into dynamic three dimensional murals. “I loved the magic of it, that out of such a thin box came a huge sculptural spider. In the end, it’s a great demonstration of how sustainable a design can be…how it can exist and disappear in space.” Arik LevyWired for success: London to Paris with cable to spare Wireflow is one of Vibia’s most iconic collections, with over 1000 km of cable sold globally over the past decade. What does 1000 km of cable correspond to in practical terms? The world’s tallest building, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, stands at a height of 828 metres; Vibia has sold the length of approximately 1208 Burj Khalifas in Wireflow cable. That’s like running 24 consecutive marathons – roughly the distance from London to Paris and back, with a bonus jog around the Eiffel Tower – or climbing 112 Mount Everests with 10 km to spare. It’s like cycling from the Berlin Wall to the Colosseum in Rome, or from the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul to the Pyramids of Egypt. You could walk the entire length of the Emperor Penguin’s Antarctic breeding grounds twice over, or kayak from Crete to Cyprus with a bit of paddling still to do. © Luka Verč © Tam Minton Designed by Arik Levy, Wireflow is crafted of fine black cables and sleek metal rods, culminating in compact LED terminals. With unlimited configurative potential, the collection is essentially a customisable system of pendants, reimagining traditional light fixtures through graphic simplification. The result is a series of lightweight, architectural structures whose timeless elegance embodies Vibia’s pursuit of enduring design that transcends contemporary trends.
