Opened in 2018 as an addition to the main centre, the Casa del Silencio (House of Silence) reinforces the identity of this institution founded by Dr. Otto Buchinger, renowned for highlighting therapeutic fasting and wholistic medicine within an integrated programme of medical care. An approach that considers healing not as an interruption in our daily rhythm of life but instead an opportunity for looking at it from a different perspective. Beyond conventional thinking the care here is shaped through generosity, organic materials and a layout that communicates calm, order and harmony.

The gallery is defined by its generous porch, welcome shade and indoor/outdoor feel, where the openings and the arches frame a view of the garden and its water feature with a clarity that changes throughout the day. This continuity specifically helps to introduce a lighting that is subtly integrated with its calming character. At the centre of the space a large table positioned by the water, looking out over the vegetation becomes a focal point for activities and functions as a meeting point. And, right above, the Circus collection, designed by Antoni Arola, introduces a suspended structure in a black finish that follows the porch’s linear axis and provides a visual order with a precise but unobtrusive presence.

Of course, this precision also extends to the way the lighting is projected. The lighting rail allows for the placement of conical shades and small spotlights above the table without cluttering the ceiling with superfluous elements, so each part responds to a specific need and maintains the continuity of the composition. Specifically, the conical shades project the lighting downward over the tabletop which facilitates routine activities such as reading, conversation, or just taking a breather between activities, while the spotlights provide more focused and controlled direct light in the areas where required.

The result is a modular system that allows for combining different effects within a singular solution. The light can be adjusted to different intensities and times of the day, creating a presence while maintaining a steady level of lighting during different activities taking place there. The structure ultimately acts as a common thread, reflecting the calmness embodied by the design within the framework of its location, lighting the space without overwhelming it.

Within a context like this, dedicated to personal care and recuperation, the lighting cannot be simply functional. It is also instrumental in the way the place is perceived, how one orientates oneself within while avoiding any sensation of coldness or impersonal design often associated with clinical type spaces. At Casa del Silencio that approach starts with the Mediterranean style architecture: brightly coloured walls, shade, generous openings and a constant dialogue with the outdoors that conditions the way that light reaches the interior, how it is filtered and augmented as the day progresses.

With its measured presence, seamlessly integrated with the space’s relaxed character which complements the life unfolding under its arches throughout the day, Circus responds to this setting sensitively without overwhelming it. The collection accompanies the project functionally, discreetly and thoughtfully, allowing for each activity to be carried out as planned without disturbing the surrounding calm. A light that facilitates the uses carried out there while fomenting a sense of calm.

Just inside the threshold of Hidden Sant Gervasi the eye is captured automatically by the stainless cylindrical island. There is no bar counter to differentiate the areas. Coffee is ground, weighed and served before whoever arrives in front. Everything happens there, with no division lines. The making process is no longer hidden, in such a way that even just ordering a cup of coffee feels different and much more intimate.

And it didn’t happen by accident. This is the fourth Hidden Coffee Roasters establishment in Barcleona, at number 101 of Travessera de Gràcia, after a pioneering journey which commenced in 2015 when speciality coffee was still an unfamiliar concept for most. Since the beginning as well as introducing the idea to the public, the brand invested in the source, traceability and its own roasting, makign an argument for direct and full transparency between the barista, the client and the product. Rather than accelerating its consumption, the preference was taking one step at a time, from the gran to the cup.

This opening, more than any of the previous ones, encapsulates the journey they’ve undertaken over more than a decade. “For us, it’s a turning point,” explains Hidden, “it’s not just about opening a new space, but about reaffirming who we are today. After years of growth in the sector, we wanted to do something that spoke from experience, from learning, and from the desire to continue adding value.”

That intention is immediately obvious on entering. The architect Javi Iniesta and his team Studio Animal in collaboration with Hidden, designed an interior that avoids anything unnecessary while putting the emphasis on coffee and its preparation. The central island brings together the making and acts as a unifying element for its surroundings, facilitating a more fluid circulation around it. Anyone nearby can observe, ask questions or simply hang out at their leisure. The overall layout is more open, homely, a space that invites spending time rather than just leaving afterwards.

The materials respect the same logic. The charred wood, inspired by the same tones as the roasting process, adds a warm character, while the steel and glass act as a pristine counterpoint. Everything combines while nothing overwhelms. The materials don’t compete with one another. Each element fulfils its specific function and adds to the coffee making activity, which is what ultimately counts, but discreetly. Just like the light.

The Array Collection by Vibia designed by Umut Yamac is suspended over the island with a presence that is equally diaphanous and sculptural. Its slim metal rings and mesh of stretched threads trace an ethereal volume that attenuates the light and directs is in two directions: downwards, where is lights helps the baristas expert hands in the preparation, and upwards, where it’s gently reflected and refracted throughout the rest of the establishment, reaching the tables and waiting area. The lighting is uniform, no glare or stark shadows, immersing the interior atmosphere in a seamless manner, insulating it from the city noises outside.

Featuring the Terra Red finish, the piece introduces an earthy tone that establishes a dialogue with the charred wood and softens the steel, naturally integrating with the interior palette. More than its presence as an object in space, it acts as a calming reference that helps to configure the various elements and mark the daily rhythm. From first thing in the morning when the deluge of coffee orders descends, till the elevenses get-togethers and the more drawn-out afternoon breaks, the lighting facilitates work, conversation or simply disconnecting from the routine. Hidden describe it simply as; “Even just as a central element, it helps us in the perception of a warmer more harmonious space. That was exactly what we were after.”

In the end, it all boils down to something very simple. The grinding of the bean, the dripping water, the expert hands serving the coffee cup. The lighting doesn’t seek to overwhelm, it’s just there, discreetly supporting the daily routine.

Hidden Sant Gervasi demonstrates how when design and lighting work together to elevate the ordinary, even an everyday decision like taking a coffee break can become a mini ritual you’ll want to repeat, in a setting where you’ll want to linger, look around, and let the coffee set the pace.

In another residential project by A&P Interiorisme, in Sabadell, the collection takes on a more everyday, functional tone. The lighting follows the rhythm of the day’s activities and domestic uses, creating a sense of comfort and continuity between living spaces. Once again, Plusminus adapts effortlessly to the existing architecture, illustrating that the same system is capable of delivering vastly different design solutions according to context.

At Sauvage TV’s headquarters in Barcelona, designed by Vania Gaetti, the system plays a role in arranging shared spaces to encourage collaboration and interaction, supporting the changing dynamics of work. Lighting is thereby adjusted to suit different activities, providing brightness and comfort in each area.

Multidisciplinary design studio Il Magma opted for fluid lighting to connect two functionally distinct spaces in its Reggio Emilia office. All the lighting in each room is connected to a single electrical connection point, overcoming the added challenge of not interfering with the ceiling’s distinctive architecture. Functional lighting was chosen for the office area to ensure visual comfort at the workstations, while the adjoining multipurpose room features more decorative diffused lighting provided by hanging spheres.

The Polestar space in Vienna stems from the comprehensive approach of BWM Designers & Architects, to which Plusminus brings continuity and coherence in a mixed-use space concept. With its black-edged aesthetic, the arrangement of the straps and luminaires provides a stylish way to define the different areas, aligning with the venue’s industrial past.

Other hybrid spaces, such as this restaurant and co-working facility integrated into the Arsenal Femenino gym’s communal area in Barcelona, are also fitted with Plusminus lighting, as interpreted by Ferruz Studio in a welcoming and balanced style. Here, the raw setting is softened by cosy, enveloping lighting, chosen in a warm terracotta tone to match the furniture. As it unfurls, Plusminus creates pockets of intimacy through pendant lighting that draw attention to the tables.

The 18th Century palazzo which has been converted into a four-star boutique hotel is located at the historic heart of the Italian city of Palermo, both the architectural and the interior design were managed by Arch. Parisi. This hospitality project is a carefully curated example of how to reinterpret the historical legacy of a building adapting it to the needs of the modern-day traveller while equally conserving the value of its noble lineage.

After negotiating the vibrant city streets arriving at Via Maqueda and crossing the threshold of Palazzo Balsamo Boutique Hotel visitors are invited to relax and surrender themselves to the calming ambience of the hotel where the lighting is designed as an inviting immersive experience perfectly integrated within the various spaces, starting with the entrance.

Just past the threshold guests are presented with a vivid atmosphere that reflects the surrounding cityscape, raw tones, pastel and oak timber colour shades, fill the interiors with a sensual presence, with its arches, vaults and custom furniture. The light fittings create a pleasant and seamless transition from the noisy streets outside to the more intimate and human scale of the hotel interior.

Curved forms are one of the defining elements of the project, beginning with the entrance doors. The Knit light fittings beyond are suspended above the side tables and the large hall mirror, introducing a luminous presence that projects a warm, inviting sensation. Designed by Meike Harde, each lamp features a textile volume that filters light through 360 degrees, reinforcing the spatial continuity with the furniture design and tactile surfaces of the surroundings.

The playful blending of dimensions together with the markedly ribbed textures create a panorama of attractive floating luminous volumes thanks to the warm immersive and even lighting projected by Knit. In addition, the combination of fittings reflects the characteristic curves of the space without overwhelming it. While the elasticated Lycra textile references the tactile design of the hotel reception desk, creating a continuity through the use of the same material.

Another of the hotel spaces where the lighting enhances the guest experience is the breakfast room. Here, the Array collection designed by Umut Yamac is presented as a series of suspended sculptures placed over the tables and chairs, featuring the same curvilinear silhouette designs. The fine tensile threads stretched between the metallic rings reflect a downward and upward illumination that wraps around the space to create a subtle yet spectacular lighting effect. The dynamic perception of the oversized volumes gives off a balanced light that eases the guests into the day ahead while enjoying their breakfast.

The interior design project for Palazzo Balsamo Boutique Hotel is a refined combination of craftsmanship and design, from the selection of the materials to the shapes of the various elements with careful attention paid to the lighting which helps reinforce the warm feeling of the interior spaces. The project illustrates how lighting can be the common thread that connects past and present, lighting the historical architecture with the contemporary design language of the Knit collection, providing a warm welcome and tactile texture, while the Array collection in the breakfast room introduces a rhythm and lighting gradation that compliments the start of the day.
