Design through Collaboration with Stefan Diez

In celebration of the biennial Light + Building 2018, Vibia partnered with Stylepark and e15 furniture to introduce a new product design collaboration with German industrial designer, Stefan Diez.

The event was hosted in the e15 Frankfurt showroom where a special installation of GUISE, designed by Stefan Diez, made an  impressive display alongside the e15 furnishings and chairs, also designed by Diez Lab.

In addition to the pendants and wall sconce Vibia debuted last year in Euroluce, a new version titled GUISE 2.0 was also presented.

Speaking about the importance of original design, the inspiration behind GUISE, Diez also touched upon the importance of working with a company that can help your designs go farther. In the case of GUISE, the Stefan Diez Design Lab brought to them a proposal for a light that used its material to diffuse light and disguise the source of the lamp.

A circular wall sconce was the original briefing, but to have a really sophisticated product, Diez explained, you must also have some additional “typologies” for other applications. His first goal was to make a pendant lamp using a horizontally oriented tube of glass with two open ends. The issue with this first light was that the illumination was only showing in the two ends and “of course this was a really weak light.”

Bringing the issue to Vibia’s CEO, Pere Llonch, Stefan explained the issue and received a suggestion to “scratch it a bit”. Not wanted to have an etched pattern for fear of changing the concept too much, he was in the end persuaded to try it. In the first trial they discovered it truly worked – the light was flowing through the lamp perfectly.

Taking it to a contact in the Czech Republic, they worked on many different designs before finding the right one. In the end a series of scores spanning almost the entire bottom surface became the final result: a lighting effect that conducts throughout the entire tube, without glare and with a very balanced light effect with more light on the surfaces where it is needed.

The success of the project was a true measure of the advantages of collaboration, the ability to take a great idea and using previous experience and resources of a brand, make the vision possible.
