Home / The Edit Insights Stories Behind: Lily Lily draws inspiration from the archetypal lamp. With its simple glass diffuser and sleek metallic structure, Ludovica+Roberto Palomba aimed to distill the traditional components of a table lamp down to their purest form, refining the relationship between each part. The result is an intimate collection that captures a fundamental idea of illumination that we all instinctively recognize.Lightness is a reduction to the essential, creating the illusion of simplicity. Lily embodies this concept, revealing contemporary lines with an ineffable sense of lightness. While it effortlessly complements minimalist spaces, its classic form also lends itself to more intricate, even ornate, environments, adding elegance without overpowering the space. “I envision Lily in a variety of spaces because its simplicity, but also the richness of its materials, makes it very versatile.”Lily’s materiality is fundamental to the sensation it transmits. For its diffuser, Ludovica+Roberto Palomba worked with translucent blown glass. Blown glass, like paper, is one of the two traditional materials most associated with light, thanks to the diffuser which, historically, was made from paper in the East and from glass in the West. “These two materials have a common feature which is to warm, to create a feeling of intimacy, to evoke the idea of light from a candle … in some ways to evoke an archaic idea of light.”While Lily has a technical foundation, it wasn’t designed as a purely functional object. It has an empathetic, emotional quality. In a residential setting, it fosters an intimate and familiar connection. As light softly filters through its diffuser, there is an interaction between object and user. “When I think of Lily, I think of creating an intimate emotional experience. In the evening, I come home, I’m tired, I turn on my lamp, read a book, or relax, or chat with friends and family. It’s a domestic genius that accompanies my evening in an intimate and familiar way.”As an object, Lily, like Dama, is very versatile. When multiple fixtures are positioned in a public space, such as a series of lounge areas in a hotel lobby, Lily’s verticality creates an architectural rhythm, organising the space and dividing it into different conversation areas. “Light, for me, has a very poetic, very intimate meaning. I always try to recreate light as a place of attraction, where people gather together.”Lily draws people towards its soft, uniform illumination, enhanced by exquisite craftsmanship. The gentle curve of its glass diffuser flows seamlessly into a crisp edge, concealing its circular lightsource. This soothing sensibility is complemented by an impossibly slender stem, retaining small indentations that represent its grounding element. “There’s the desire, the passion, and the joy of working together, this is very present with Vibia. There’s a great sympathy,.. a great respect for the idea, and also a great curiosity to discover new things.”When you look at Lily from afar, you see a very simple object, but when you get closer you discover that in reality, inside, there is a complexity, in terms of technology and quality, that makes it an object of extreme value. “This magical union between the creativity of the company? and the creativity of the designer, generates, in my opinion, the drive to innovate, to bring something that goes beyond the comfort zone of one and the other.”Discover Lily Share on Facebook Twitter Linkedin Pinterest Pinterest You may also like...
