Plusminus lights the Oleoteca Urbana project, in Bulgaria

Lovers of extra virgin olive oil now have a go-to destination in the Bulgarian capital to acquire this highly appreciated product and learn more about it. This beautifully designed shop which goes by the name Oleoteca Urbana evokes an ambience of comfort, organic style and careful detailing. The double height space allows the sculptural Plusminus collection by Vibia to shine discreetly, adding to the premium customer experience.

The recently opened Oleoteca Urbana is located in Sofia, Bulgaria. It has already become an obligatory destination for anyone looking for premium extra virgin olive oil there. The interior design of this retail project, by Savina Matakieva, is conceived as a tiny gem for lovers of this “liquid gold.” Every detail has been carefully considered to define an atmosphere of simple yet sophisticated lines, where the lighting plays a key role.

Without being overly large the spatial layout has been optimised to take full advantage of every square centimetre. Therefore, the large main area is two divided into two spaces, one with a double height ceiling, with the emphasis on the display and sale of the product including a selection of more than 40 varieties of extra virgin olive oil sourced from Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal. Another, located on a small mezzanine area, which opens to a kitchen is used to host events, tastings and educational activities.

A large plate glass window dominates the façade, flooding the interior with natural light. The neutral tones together with the organic materials and the light characterise a refined ambience with Mediterranean influences that creates a sensation of well-being while browsing the merchandise. Furthermore, the absence of any unnecessary decorative elements helps focus the eye on the collection of extra virgin olive oils which includes ecological options and oils with protected designations of origins. The collection is displayed strategically on different walls of the shop featuring floating shelving that underline its visual lightness while the backlighting detail highlights the product in the manner it deserves.

On entering the shop visitors perceive the attention to detail that denotes the work of a design professional. And the lighting scheme is one of the most noteworthy aspects. The decision to select the Plusminus collection of light fittings by Vibia, suspended from the textile belts that characterise its design, resolves the challenge of the tall ceiling height. They are subtly integrated with the interior architecture adding a marked sculptural presence.

This lighting system, designed by the Diez Office, offers the versatility that is so important for these kinds of spaces. In this case the grouping of light fittings is playfully suspended at different heights, combining spherical and semi-spherical shapes with a 360° lighting diffusion and directed beam effect, respectively. And as for the beige tones chosen for the finish, they reinforce the chromatic aura of the overall project.

Despite looking like an installation of large-scale light fittings, visually Plusminus has a subtle presence that doesn’t overwhelm the space, but rather delicately guides visitors around the shop from above.

Oleoteca Urbana has already become a landmark in the city thanks to its rich selection of extra virgin olive oils that includes everything from hard-to-find varieties to rare blends, including gourmet olives, homemade pâtés, spices and superior-quality seafood. The educational activities offered are no less impressive, a modern academy for fans of the authentic excellence of the Mediterranean. The bright colour tones, the sculptural lighting and the clever spatial layout convert this project into an exclusive haven that exudes the well-being which a premium shopping experience like this deserves.
