Introducing Closer: diaphanous lighting that moves seamlessly between inside and outside

The Collection is designed by Ichiro Iwasaki who was inspired by a simple idea: to free the physical lighting object to allow the fabric and its interior light to define the presence of the lamp. To achieve that lightweight sensation, the light source is integrated with the upper part of the shade, contained within, free from formal restrictions. The resulting textile volume is semi-transparent, as if it were infused with a warm and diffuse lighting, designed to create cosy atmospheres.

Closer is expressed in three different types of shade, designed as a lightweight and semi-transparent mesh each shade takes on slightly different proportions, wider or more elongated, to provide a repertoire of volumes that allow for the creation of custom lighting compositions. The shades are finished with a black border perimeter detail that reinforces the definition of the volume and makes it easier to integrate with different versions of the light fitting.

Each piece is individually handcrafted: the braided mesh, firm yet malleable, is woven with meticulous attention to detail to ensure an even weft that filters light without sacrificing its character. The choice of finishes draws from Vibia’s colour palette of pastel terracotta, beige, and green tones, designed to add subtle nuances to the lighting. The result is a vibrant texture with tactile and visual depth.

The collection includes pendant and portable versions (floor and table)

The pendant version can be installed via a cable, allowing for an adjustable height setting, or fixed metal rods, available in two lengths (106 cm and 150 cm), that provide greater stability on sloped ceilings or exterior locations exposed to the elements. The anchor fixing features an aluminium ceiling rose that integrates discreetly with the ceiling. These options allow for the creation of compositions with volumes suspended at different heights and variations of transparencies in space.

The floor and table versions add a mobility feature: portable, cordless and inductive charging via a base designed to maintain the formal purity of the object. Its surprisingly lightweight design contrasts with the generous visual volume of the diffuser, making it easy to move around from place to place wherever necessary.

The formal refinement of Closer doesn’t affect it performance in the outdoors. The collection satisfies the current exterior lighting regulations and was designed with durability in mind: the selected materials, the UVA radiation protection (to prevent sun damage to the colour finishes) as well as the fixings that guarantee its stability and security.

The fixed rod version provides an especially suitable version for outdoor settings where wind is an issue or for sloped roofs, minimising swaying motion and ensuring a consistent directionality for the light.

The versatility of Closer allows for playful combinations of volumes, colours and heights: the pendant lamp elements dialogue with one another creating constellations and compositions that mould the perception of space, while the portable units act as moveable halos that complete the overall lighting scheme on separate planes. The sum of these lighting parts creates a sort of symphony of cosy lighting layers that complement spaces discreetly.
