New terrace design updates Vibia’s outdoor exhibition space

After introducing a range of new outdoor lighting solutions to the existing portfolio, it became clear that Vibia’s terrace was in need of refurbishment. Bordering Vibia’s headquarters, the terrace acts as an extension of the indoor showroom as well as offering a generous space for meetings and events.

Originally designed in collaboration with Vibia’s long-term partner, Barcelona-based designer Josep Lluis Xuclà, we asked studio Xuclà to manage the renovation. The project had two main objectives: to update the existing space with the latest collections, and to make the terrace a more welcoming environment for future events. The new design incorporates most of Vibia’s outdoor lighting collections, existing and new, and reflects a new era for Vibia.

Another proposal by Xuclà, Palo Alto is defined by a linear, angular silhouette. Industrial in style yet natural in form, it recalls a tree whose steel “branches” are embedded with LEDs, casting a diffuse, downlight. The terrace incorporates several models of different sizes and shapes; an architectural response to the selection of trees.

“We maintained elements of the original project which continue to fulfil the function for which we designed them. The pergolas, for example, soften the transition from inside to outside, and the concrete partitions compartmentalise the large space into more intimate areas.”

Bamboo was clearly inspired by its namesake. Designed by Antoni Arola & Enric Rodríguez, it is characterised by a slender silhouette that blends in with the existing flora. Seemingly ‘planted’ into the decking and gravel, several Bamboo floor lamps illuminate the concrete partitions and walls with lively “spots” of light.

A Meridiano floor lamp doubles up as additional seating. Designed by Jordi Vilardell & Meritxell Vidal, guests are drawn to its magnetic luminous effect. Composed of a structure of corrugated steel rods, it radiates with a burst of light and shadow that enriches the surrounding textures.

Extending the star motif, a composition of Meridiano wall lights animates the bare façade behind. Like a dazzling constellation, several opaque discs radiate with light from an invisible source, projecting beams of light and shadow that reach out across the building’s exterior.

“The new planters meant we had to relocate all the existing ones, thus achieving a more intimate atmosphere.”

Empty, lends itself to Vibia’s ‘furniture meets light’ concept. Much like Meridiano, it incorporates a table, stool and light fixture into a single three-dimensional entity. Forming a compact table and chair arrangement, Xuclà invites guests to interact with his design. Featured here in a new Graphite Black finish, each geometric structure glows with subtle, indirect light from an invisible source.

The Break floor lamps are a Xuclà & Alemany design for Vibia. The collection consists of a bevelled cube with a recess from which light escapes, and a pair of blocks stacked on top of one another, the space between them allowing light to pass through.

Dotted around the terrace in pairs and groups of three, Break’s rust lacquer and concrete finishes blend effortlessly with the prevailing industrial aesthetic.

The new layout also features several Wind floor lamps. Designed by Jordi Vilardell, the principle characteristic of the collection is its materiality. The diffuser is made from delicately woven fibreglass, producing a uniquely textured surface. Matching the gentle heat of a summer night, Wind invites visitors to mingle and unwind in the warmth of its lighting effect.
