New terrace design updates Vibia’s outdoor exhibition space

After introducing a range of new outdoor lighting solutions to the existing portfolio, it became clear that Vibia’s terrace was in need of refurbishment. Bordering Vibia’s headquarters, the terrace acts as an extension of the indoor showroom as well as offering a generous space for meetings and events.

Originally designed in collaboration with Vibia’s long-term partner, Barcelona-based designer Josep Lluis Xuclà, we asked studio Xuclà to manage the renovation. The project had two main objectives: to update the existing space with the latest collections, and to make the terrace a more welcoming environment for future events. The new design incorporates most of Vibia’s outdoor lighting collections, existing and new, and reflects a new era for Vibia.

“We incorporated a new Chill Out zone, featuring a sofa arrangement that encourages a more recreational use of the terrace.”

Josep Lluis Xuclà

Designed to transition seamlessly from day to night, the terrace incorporates various spaces for informal meetings, relaxing or socialising, showcasing a range of lighting solutions to extend its usability beyond the daylight hours.

One of the major developments was the incorporation of a new “chill out” zone, where a sofa and coffee table arrangement invites people to relax and spend time in the space. Illuminated from above, a single floor fixture extends vertically into the air before bending over in a broad arch.

Designed by Víctor Carrasco, Out provides flat diffuse lighting, perfect for both indoor and outdoor communal spaces. The terrace features a number of fixtures in a range of colours, most notably bringing warmth and a touch of romanticism to the outdoor table and seating areas.

A rechargeable Mayfair Mini illuminates the coffee table with a soft, inviting light. Designed by Diego Fortunado, its sleek profile and glossy beige finish bring an air of quiet elegance and refinement. A cableless, portable solution for indoor and outdoor use, the design is as slick and fuss-free as the space it occupies.

Forming a secondary, compact seating arrangement, Empty lends itself to Vibia’s ‘furniture meets light’ concept. Designed by Xuclà, it incorporates a table, stool and light fixture into a single three-dimensional entity. Featured here in a new Graphite Black finish, the geometric structures glow with subtle, indirect light from an invisible source.

“We maintained elements of the original project which continue to fulfil the function for which we designed them. The pergolas, for example, soften the transition from inside to outside, and the concrete partitions compartmentalise the large space into more intimate areas.”

Josep Lluis Xuclà

Outdoor lighting has a dual role of curating an atmosphere and providing practical illumination. Integrated into various settings throughout the terrace, Vibia introduces visitors to a range of transitional products.

One such solution is Class. Designed by Sebastian Herkner, it offers powerful transitional illumination with a refined aesthetic. The fixture stands handsome and proud, bathing broad swathes of decking in diffuse light thanks to its fluted glass diffuser.

The terrace is crafted of natural materials, including timber decking, earthenware planters, and a gravel perimeter. Dots Outdoor’s simple, curved form and natural finish offer subtle integration within the surrounding environment. Designed by Martín Azúa, each bollard is carved with an opening that reflects light from the inside, welcoming guests with a pleasant low-level lighting effect.

Palo Alto is defined by a linear, angular silhouette. Another proposal by Xuclà, it casts a diffuse, downlight that’s ideal for pathway lighting. Industrial in style yet natural in form, it recalls a tree whose steel “branches” are embedded with LEDs. The terrace incorporates several models of different sizes and shapes.

Bamboo was clearly inspired by its namesake. Designed by Antoni Arola & Enric Rodríguez, it is characterised by a slender silhouette that blends in with the existing flora. Seemingly ‘planted’ into the decking and gravel, several Bamboo floor lamps illuminate the concrete partitions, walkways and walls with lively “spots” of light.

“One of the challenges we faced was to try to avoid sun exposure, so we designed large planters with trees, placed in such a way that they provide shade for the main activity zones.”

Josep Lluis Xuclà

The connecting terrace is flanked by the high walls of Vibia HQ. Integrated discreetly into the space, a range of wall lights complement the surrounding architecture.

Break Plus converts various sections of the wall into a three dimensional mural. Designed by Xuclà for Vibia, the collection brings compositional value to an otherwise blank space: arranged individually or in groups, each stylized volume casts indirect light in opposing directions, creating a subtle dialogue of light and shadow.

In response to its austere surroundings, a set of Bamboo wall lights creates a dynamic play of light and shadow. Arranged in a zigzag across the building’s facade, the composition creates a wave of indirect light that encourages indoor-outdoor transition.

Meridiano wall lights animate the bare façade with their intricate star motif. Like a dazzling constellation, several fixtures radiate with light from an invisible source, projecting a burst of beams that reach out across the building’s exterior.

“The new planters meant we had to relocate all the existing ones, thus achieving a more intimate atmosphere.”

Josep Lluis Xuclà

Much like Empty, the Meridiano floor lamp doubles up as a piece of furniture. Designed by Jordi Vilardell & Meritxell Vidal, guests are drawn to its magnetic luminous effect. Composed of a structure of corrugated steel rods, it radiates with a burst of light and shadow that enriches the surrounding texture of the wooden decking.

The Break floor lamps are a Xuclà & Alemany design for Vibia. The collection consists of a bevelled cube with a recess from which light escapes, and a pair of blocks stacked on top of one another, the space between them allowing light to pass through.

Dotted around the terrace in pairs and groups of three, Break’s rust lacquer and concrete finishes blend effortlessly with the prevailing industrial aesthetic.

The new layout also features several Wind floor lamps. Designed by Jordi Vilardell, the principle characteristic of the collection is its materiality. The diffuser is made from delicately woven fibreglass, producing a uniquely textured surface. Matching the gentle heat of a summer night, Wind invites visitors to mingle and unwind in the warmth of its lighting effect.
