A working day with Umut Yamac

British architect, sculptor and designer Umut Yamac explores the intersection between light, movement and space. Fascinated by how certain objects, activated by their surroundings, transcend their everyday purpose and enable a deeper emotional connection, Yamac established his own design studio in 2011, where he creates domestic objects and public installations that respond to both user and space through playful interaction and movement.

Array is a culmination of experiments exploring the potential of thread to create kinetic volumes of light through tension. Activated by the presence of the viewer, the layered threads create an interference pattern, or moire, the volumes shimmering as light passes through the strings.

Yamac explores his conceptual ideas through a hands-on process of making and testing materials, where the workshop plays a central role in the development and realisation of each project. Vibia had the pleasure of being invited to his London studio where we were able to witness this meticulous process first hand.
